Family

Charles

My name is Charles. I am seven years old. My parents’ names are Tobias and Sabina. Together we live in a house by the sea. We also have two dogs, Felix and Timmy. They are running on the beach all the time. Our house has four rooms and two bathrooms. My own room has green walls, a bed, TV and a lot of toys in it. If it rains, I play or watch TV, but what I like most is swimming in the sea when it is sunny. My dad also wants to buy a boat for us.

Animals II

At the Zoo 1

Today we went to the zoo. We saw a lot of different animals. I knew many of them from my books. In one cage, there were twelve monkeys playing. I did not like them very much because they were very loud and scary. Next to them were five tigers who were sleeping all the time. But I really liked the three huge elephants. We saw them eating their lunch. It was very interesting. When we were leaving, I bought a small elephant toy to remember them.

Family II

The Myers

The Myers are the best-known family in our city. At the head of the family are Jonathan and Mary. They own a number of restaurants in the city which are very popular because many tourists visit our town. They also have three children. The oldest, Josh, is twenty-five and he is helping them run one of the five restaurants. So far, he’s not been very good at it. The middle child is called Adam. Adam is twenty-one and he is studying at a university. Alice, the youngest child, is only sixteen so she’s too young to help with managing the restaurant, but she is already working part-time at one of the restaurants to earn her pocket money. Although they are rich, the Myers are very humble and polite, so everyone in our city likes them.

House

My Room

My room is not very big. It has yellow walls and blue carpet. There are a bed, a wardrobe and a desk with a chair. I always do my homework sitting behind this desk.

You can also find a huge library there because I love reading books. It is the biggest thing in my room.

In the middle, there is a lot of free space, so that I can play on the carpet.

On the walls, there are framed pictures: one is a picture of our family and two are paintings of horses.

There is a box under my bed. I hide all my treasures in this box. There are stones from the beach, buttons and colourful beads. No one knows about this besides me.

At School

My Classmates

There are 25 other children with me in the class: 17 boys and 8 girls. I sit with a boy called Mike in the front row so that I could see better. Our desk is right next to John's. He is my best friend and we also spend time after school together. I don't talk to the girls much, because I am very shy. During every break, all the boys gather together to play cards. It's a lot of fun. I am sure going to miss my classmates once I go to high school.

Shopping

Buying Shoes

I really needed to buy new shoes, so I went to the mall today. There are four shoe stores in our mall, but I really didn't like what they were selling in the first two. The third store was closed. Finally, there were some nice sneakers in the last store. I tried on my usual size, number seven, but they didn’t fit me. I asked the shop assistant for a smaller size, but they didn’t have any. I was beginning to lose all hope. But then the assistant found one last pair in the right size back in the storage. They weren’t the same colour as the ones I liked, but I didn’t mind. There was even a discount on them! It was a long day, but I was finally able to buy myself new shoes!

Films

Avengers

The 2012 film Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, is the first film in which various Marvel heroes meet to protect the universe together. Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Captain America, Hulk, Nick Fury, and Hawkeye save the Earth from Thor’s brother Loki, who attempts to conquer the Earth.

The number of famous actors working on the film made it very expensive and difficult to film, but it was worth it. It is the third highest-grossing film of all times and the first in the series of four Avengers films that followed. The Avengers is the sixth film of the twenty-three that make up the Marvel cinematic universe (as of early 2021).

Although much of the story takes place in New York, the film was mostly shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Cleveland, Ohio. The most interesting filming location is definitely the Creekside mushroom farm, which provided as many as 150 miles of tunnels which were some 300 feet below ground, where a large chase scene was shot.

Famous People

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) was one of the most famous American actresses and a legend of the Golden Age of Hollywood. With her curled blonde hair and red lipstick, she is still a great icon of pop culture.

She was born Norma Jeane Mortenson to an unhappy family. Since her mother had her very young and quickly went through two divorces, young Norma spent most of her childhood in foster homes. Following her mother’s example, she also married young, as she was only sixteen at the time. During her first marriage, she was working in a factory where she was discovered, after which she began her modelling career.

After adopting her new name, Monroe became successful and quickly found her way into the world of film. Unfortunately, her life was not happy. None of her three marriages worked out, she often had to play stupid blondes, despite being quite intelligent herself. In Holywood, she was overshadowed by actresses who were taken more seriously. It resulted in Monroe killing herself by overdosing on sleeping pills.

Earthquakes

An earthquake is the sudden movement of the Earth's tectonic plates, resulting in shaking of the ground. This shaking can result in the damage of various structures such as buildings and further breakdown of the Earth's surface.

The sudden release of tension in the tectonic plates sends waves of energy that travel through the Earth. Seismology studies the cause, frequency, type and size of earthquakes.

There are large earthquakes and small earthquakes. Large earthquakes can take down buildings and cause death and injury. Earthquakes are measured using observations from seismographs. The magnitude of an earthquake and the intensity of shaking is usually reported on the Richter scale. On the scale, 2 is scarcely noticeable, and magnitude 5 (or more) causes damage over a wide area.
