Family

Kate

My name is Kate and I am ten years old. I live in an old house in a small village near London. I live with my parents, John and Tina, and my two brothers. Their names are Lukas and Martin. We also have a dog, her name is Nala. I take Nala for a walk every day. She likes to go to the forest.

My room isn't big but I like it. The walls are pink because that's my favourite colour. My bike is pink as well. I ride the bike every Saturday when we go to my grandma's.

Animals II

The Farm

Usually, there are a lot of animals on a farm. Each of them is there for a reason. People most often have chickens, because they eat almost everything and lay eggs every day. There is always a dog on a farm to guard it and a cat to catch mice, so they would not eat the grain for the chickens. The cat can drink milk from the cows. A cow is not the only big animal you can find on a farm. There can also be horses around, to help with the hard work. Another animal that produces milk is sheep. The sheep are also kept for their wool, which is warm and soft. These animals need a lot of food to eat, so farms usually have big fields around them.

Family II

Claire

My name is Emily and I would like to tell you a bit about my sister.

My sister's name is Claire and she is twenty-six years old. So she doesn't live with us anymore. She lives in Oxford with her husband John and their baby. His name is Joshua. He is eleven months old. I can't believe that I'm his aunt; I'm only nine years old! They also have a dog.

I live in Cambridge with my parents so we visit Claire only once a month. I enjoy going to Oxford because I love to be with Joshua. I think that his favourite animal is the elephant because they are everywhere in their house – on his clothes, in his room, everywhere!

House

Our House

We live in a village called Shipley. Our house is not very big. It has four rooms, a kitchen, and two bathrooms. The house is big enough for us: me, my mum Martha, my dad Jake and my sister Sarah. My brother Michael lives on his own now.

There are two small rooms–one is my room and the other is my sister’s. The biggest room in the house is our living room. My parents spend most of the time there. It has a very comfortable couch and a big television. Sometimes we play board games there.

Our kitchen is small, but my mum doesn’t spend much time there, because we eat our lunches at school. That is why it is always very clean.

One of the bathrooms, the smaller one, is used by my sister and me. Our parents use the other one.

Our house is not very special, but I think it is really comfortable and that’s what is important.

At School

My School

I am Billy and I would like to tell you a bit about my school. It is the only primary school in the town and it is not very big. It has 210 students and 10 teachers work there. Behind the school, there is a yard where we play. We also have our PE classes there in the summer because we do not have our own gym. During the winter, when it is too cold outside, we have swimming courses at the local swimming pool instead of PE.

Shopping

At the Grocer's

On my way home from work, I went grocery shopping. I need to have a list so that I won’t forget what I have to buy. My local grocer's is a small shop next to my house. It’s best to shop there in the morning because there is a lot of people in the afternoon. Unfortunately, it’s still closed when I go to work. Today, I managed to buy almost everything on my list. The package of six eggs costs £1. The milk costs £ 0.80, but I already bought some before. The apples cost £ 1.60. The bread usually costs £ 1.10, but they don’t have any left in the afternoon. Even though supermarkets always have bread in the afternoon and are a bit cheaper, I prefer going here, because the staff is more friendly.

Films

The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings is a film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and based on a fantasy trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien. Released between 2001-2003, the films are among the most successful ever made. They follow the story of Frodo, a hobbit from Middle-earth, who has to destroy a ring to defeat the evil Sauron. As is usually the case in fantasy, besides men and hobbits, there are many other kinds of creatures, such as elves, dwarves, wizards, and orcs.

Both the books and the films are famous for its size and depth. For example, there were around 18,000 costumes made for the films. Each main character had around 30 copies of the same costume and there were as many as 150 types of different clothes designed for each kind of creature in the story.

Famous People

Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian lawyer, best known for his fight for the Indian independence. He is often called Father of the Nation. However, not all of his life was spent living in India; after studying law in London, Gandhi has lived in South Africa for a long time, before finally moving back to his homeland in 1915. Back then, India was still part of the British Empire.

Gandhi is known for trying to achieve change by non-violent protests. That means that he would not fight his enemies, destroy things, or resist going to jail. Despite all this, he was killed by an assassin in 1948.

Many people mistake Mahatma for Gandhi’s first name. Actually, it is a title that was given to him in 1914, which can be translated as “great soul”. Gandhi’s real first name is Mohandas.

Saturn

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun in the Solar System. It is the second largest planet in the Solar System, after Jupiter. Saturn is one of the four gas giant planets, along with Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune.

Saturn has 82 known moons orbiting the planet. 53 are officially named and 29 are waiting to be named. The largest moon is Titan, which is larger in volume than the planet Mercury. Titan is the second-largest moon in the Solar System. The largest moon is Jupiter's moon, Ganymede. There is also a very large system of rings around Saturn. These rings are made of ice with smaller amounts of rocks and dust.

Films II

Avatar

Avatar is a 2009 sci-fi film directed by James Cameron. It takes place in the 22nd century on Pandora, a moon populated by a race of aliens called Na’vi. People have created avatars, artificial bodies that look like the Na’vi people, to be able to explore Pandora. The only difference between the avatars and the Na’vi is that avatars have five fingers and eyebrows, but the Na’vi have only four fingers.

Avatar is most famous for its innovative use of CGI (computer-generated imagery) that makes up sixty per cent of the whole film and allows it to have very realistic aliens in it. Cameron wanted to create this film much earlier, but he was waiting for the technology to get better. As a result of his effort, Avatar has won three Academy Awards out of nine that it was nominated for and is the highest-grossing film ever.
