Famous People

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was an American reverend and a Civil Rights Movement leader. Although slavery has been abolished in 1865, Southern countries in the U.S., such as Alabama or Georgia, were still incredibly racist. The Civil Rights Movement was attempting to improve this situation so that African-Americans could vote, go to the same schools and do the same jobs as the white population.

King is famous for giving many speeches on the topic of civil rights of African-American people, the most famous of which, “I Have a Dream”, has been heard by 250,000 people in Washington. Besides that, he was also an activist practising non-violence and civil disobedience. That means that as long as they do not hurt anyone, people should break the laws that are discriminatory, as a form of a protest. Just like the original non-violent activist, Mahatma Gandhi, King was assassinated for his efforts.

When he was thirty-five, King received a Nobel Peace Prize for his achievements and importance for the Civil Rights Movement. He also got more than fifty honorary degrees and is going to be added to the five-dollar bill.

Films

Shrek

Shrek is a 2001 animated film from DreamWorks that is an unlikely success story. It is about a grumpy green ogre, Shrek, who just wants to be left alone. He is joined by an annoying and talkative Donkey and together they go on a quest to save the beautiful Princess Fiona to get Shrek’s home back.

Although children can watch it, the film is mainly targeted at an adult audience. There are contemporary songs and many pop-cultural references that children simply wouldn’t understand. The film is basically a parody of Disney and normal fairytales. That’s why it is still, twenty years after it came out, very popular on the internet.

The film is known for its attention to detail. Rather than having everything drawn by hand, much of it is computer generated. In the research for the film, the artists were taking mud baths to learn its movements and were looking for a real donkey that would serve as a model for the film version. This is one of the many reasons why the film has won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Yellowstone National Park is a national park in the United States. It was the world's first national park. United States President Ulysses S. Grant signed a law to create it. The name was taken from the Yellowstone River, which flows through the park. Yellowstone was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

Yellowstone National Park is famous for its geysers and hot springs. The park contains about half the world's geysers. The world's most famous geyser, the Old Faithful Geyser, is in Yellowstone National Park. It also is a home to grizzly bears, wolves, bison, and elk. Many tourists visit the park each year to see the geysers and animals there.
