Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until 1633. From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison. Its importance as a part of Scotland's national heritage was recognised increasingly from the early 19th century onwards, and various restoration programmes have been carried out over the past century and a half. As one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite rising of 1745. Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100-year-old history, giving it a claim to having been “the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world”.

Famous Paintings

The Persistence of Memory

Created by the Spanish painter Salvador Dalí in 1931, The Persistence of Memory is not only his most famous work but also one of the best known surrealist paintings. It is a very small oil on canvas that is currently in the Museum of Modern Art in the United States.

Surrealist paintings do not show reality, but things that are different than we would expect them to be, much like dreams. There is no one meaning, but we can recognise that time is the main theme of this painting. It can be seen in the clocks, the sand and the hour-glass-shaped ants. The painter has also added himself, lying with one eye closed in the middle of the painting.

People often think that this painting is a reaction to the theory of relativity because the melting clocks are stretched, as time can sometimes seem to be. However, Dalí has commented that the inspiration behind the clocks had been a melting cheese.

Fables

The Wind and the Sun

The Wind and the Sun were arguing which was stronger. Suddenly they saw a traveller and Sun said: “Now we will find out the truth! The one which can force the traveller to take off his cloak wins! You begin.”

So the Sun hid behind a cloud and waited to see what happens. The Wind began to blow as hard as it could on the traveller. But the harder the Wind blew, the closer did the traveller wrap his cloak around him, until finally, the Wind had to give up.

Then the Sun came out and started shining at the traveller. It did not take long and the traveller found it too hot to walk and had to take off his cloak.
