Three Princes

The king is offering a great reward to anyone who will defeat the dragon. Three princes have decided that they will be stronger if they go together. Hubert is riding around on his horse, trying to catch the dragon's attention with the broom so that Egon can shoot him. But the dragon isn’t scared of Hubert’s broom and not even of Egon’s stones. Prince Percy has a different plan. He is trying to knock out the dragon with his old, smelly socks. If he had any idea how much it smells inside the dragon’s cave, he would know that the socks won’t work on the dragon either.

Finn the Mouse

Finn the Mouse

Finn is a small mouse that lives on a big farm. He wants to bake a cake for the other mice but needs to get a lot of things to do it: eggs, sugar, apples and flour. But where to get them? “I can’t go to a shop,” Finn thought. “Shops are for people and you need money to go to a shop. What can I do?” But then he remembered! “I am on a big farm! All the things I need for the cake are here. First thing I need is to get some eggs. It’s time to visit the chickens.”

Fables

The Milkmaid

Patty the Milkmaid was going to the market, carrying her milk in a bucket on her head. As she was walking down the street, she began thinking about the money she would earn and what she could buy with it.

Patty decided that she would sell the milk and use the money to buy a chicken. The chicken would start laying eggs which she would collect. Once she gets enough eggs, she is going to sell them to the doctor's wife and use the money she gets to buy a new dress and a cap. She could already see herself walking down the street, tossing her head at all the girl envying her new clothes. And at that moment, lost in the fantasy, she tossed her head and threw down her bucket which broke and spilt all the milk on the ground.

Family

My Mum

My name is Peggy and I would like to tell you a bit about my mum.

My mum is the best person in the world! Her name is Amanda. She is thirty-five years old and she is a cook. She works in an Italian restaurant so we often have pizza for dinner. But my favourite dish is spaghetti with tomato sauce. I would like to become a cook just as my mum.

My mum is also very beautiful. She is very tall, she has got black long hair, brown eyes and she always smiles. She always tells me a story when I go to bed. Then she goes to sleep as well because she gets up very early, usually at five o'clock.

Animals II

My Dog

I have a dog. His name is Dusty. He has yellow fur and he eats a lot because he is very big. Dusty’s favourite toy is a blue ball. He plays with it a lot. Sometimes he plays with my brother and me. We also go for a walk every day. We always go around the lake and then back home. Every weekend we go for a long walk in the forest. After we get home, Dusty goes to sleep in his brown basket. He sleeps in our living room, next to the sofa. I love my dog very much!

Family II

My dad

My name is Liam and my dad’s name is Harry. He is forty-one and he has blonde hair and blue eyes, just like me. My dad likes dressing well and wearing suits and expensive shirts, but he usually doesn’t because he spends most of his time at work in the hospital where he wears white clothes.

He always gets up before I do, at five a.m., and then goes to work. It takes some time for him to get there, so he needs to leave home early. He then starts at six in the morning, works for twelve hours and comes back at around seven p.m.

While he’s gone, my grandma takes me to school and later helps me with my homework. I help her prepare dinner, which we all eat together when dad comes home. I wish I could spend more time with him but I know that what he is doing is important.

House

In Our Garden

There is a big garden behind our house. It has a lot of space, so we play there often with my sister Sarah and our dog Flash. We even have a small swimming pool, so I can spend the whole summer swimming if it is warm enough. My dad always listens to the radio when we do that. It is just a shame that we do not have a sandpit as well.

In the back of the garden is a tall tree, under which I usually sit and read my books. Every time I do that, my mum brings snacks to eat: ham toast and black tea. It’s very nice of her.

My mum grows some tomatoes and peppers by the fence. In front of the house, she also grows beautiful red roses. There are five bushes of them.

It’s really nice to have a garden because we can spend a lot of time outside in the fresh air.

At School

After School Club

After we finish school at noon and have lunch, some children go to the after school club. There we wait until our parents have time to pick us up from school. While we wait, we go outside and play. If the weather is bad, we stay in the club and play games together or paint pictures. My mum picks me up at 3 p.m., but some children stay longer. John has to wait until 4 p.m. when his big brother comes to pick him up.

Shopping

Buying Shoes

I really needed to buy new shoes, so I went to the mall today. There are four shoe stores in our mall, but I really didn't like what they were selling in the first two. The third store was closed. Finally, there were some nice sneakers in the last store. I tried on my usual size, number seven, but they didn’t fit me. I asked the shop assistant for a smaller size, but they didn’t have any. I was beginning to lose all hope. But then the assistant found one last pair in the right size back in the storage. They weren’t the same colour as the ones I liked, but I didn’t mind. There was even a discount on them! It was a long day, but I was finally able to buy myself new shoes!

Films

Shrek

Shrek is a 2001 animated film from DreamWorks that is an unlikely success story. It is about a grumpy green ogre, Shrek, who just wants to be left alone. He is joined by an annoying and talkative Donkey and together they go on a quest to save the beautiful Princess Fiona to get Shrek’s home back.

Although children can watch it, the film is mainly targeted at an adult audience. There are contemporary songs and many pop-cultural references that children simply wouldn’t understand. The film is basically a parody of Disney and normal fairytales. That’s why it is still, twenty years after it came out, very popular on the internet.

The film is known for its attention to detail. Rather than having everything drawn by hand, much of it is computer generated. In the research for the film, the artists were taking mud baths to learn its movements and were looking for a real donkey that would serve as a model for the film version. This is one of the many reasons why the film has won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Famous People

Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was perhaps the most famous physicist ever. Although he was born in Germany, he moved to Switzerland early on and then spent the last twenty years of his life living in the United States.

He is so well-known that his name is often used as a synonym for a genius. No wonder, at the age of twelve, he could count better than most adults. But not only that. People often also imagine an eccentric: a person who is so deep in their thoughts that they don’t care if they look or behave oddly. After all, Einstein almost always had crazy hair and no socks on.

Einstein’s perhaps most famous idea is the theory of relativity. This discovery is helping us in our everyday life because it is used, for example, in GPS.

Simple Wikipedia

Elephant

Elephants are the largest living land mammals. Elephants have strong, leathery skin to protect themselves. Their skin color is grey.

At birth, an elephant calf may weigh as much as 100 kg. The baby elephant develops for 20 to 22 months inside its mother. No other land animal takes this long to develop before being born.

In the wild, elephants have a strong family relationship. Their ways of acting toward other elephants are hard for people to understand. They talk to each other with very low sounds. Most elephant sounds are so low, people cannot hear them. But elephants can hear these sounds far away.

Famous Paintings

The Last Supper

The Last Supper is a work by Leonardo da Vinci depicting Jesus telling the Twelve Apostles that one of them would betray him. It is not a normal-sized painting in a gallery, but a large mural that is over eight meters long and can be found in a church in Milan.

Painted at the end of the fifteenth century, it has been very damaged over the years. The room where the mural is has been used as an armoury, stable and even a prison. As if this wasn’t enough, the church was bombed during World War II, although the bomb didn’t hit the painting directly. Any attempts to move or restore it failed. As a result, the paint is very faded and the details can be studied only from the two copies that exist: one in Tongerlo and the other in London.
